American Dirt- A Must Read

American Dirt humanizes the story of migrants and gives those a voice making a hard choice trekking crossing the border into the states. This novel will change how we think about the world, that changes us in a profound way. American Dirt is one of those rare novels. This is the first book by author, Jeannie Cummins that I have read and looking forward to reading her other books.
The story of a Mexican mother and son who are trying to escape a drug lord who killer her husband and family. A mother and son who are desperate to leave Mexico and head to the States while escaping the cartel. They eventually travel on top of a train with other migrants who are also looking for a better life. I finished reading the book in a day, heartbreaking from page one till the last page. American Dirt brings a voice to those who are faced with making a hard choice to trek across the desert with very little.
Beautifully written. This will be the January 21st. 2020. A must read for everyone. The story will be with me for a long time. Heart-wrenching.

Isaiah’s Legacy

Mesu Andrews has yet again written another outstanding book. The amount of research that the author puts into a book shows, I was pulled into the story from page one. “Isaiah’s Legacy” continues the story that started in “Isaiah’s Daughter.” The author took me through the reign of King Manasseh who was considered one of most wicked kings. Mesu weaves biblical history and historical fact into a book that one should not miss reading.
I prayed for Manasseh that he turns his life to God and learn the truth in daylight. Shulle questions God and wonders how he can be sovereign, Zibah reminds her that God is always with us. Lots of truth is displayed with each character and will leave the reader asking for more. I reread the story of Manasseh and it gave me a different perspective of his life. If you love biblical fiction run to the closest bookstore, carve time out to read “Isaiah’s Legacy.” I highly recommend this book.

A Struggle Between Faith & Doubt

Dr. Warren, a practicing a brain surgeon and an Iraq War veteran struggles with his faith when things don’t go as planned. Where God is when faced with patients who have brain cancer. We know that God is a mighty healer, but what happens when those who are faced with health trials are not healed. Why are others at peace, but some lose faith? One might wonder where God is when the diagnose comes in and it is not good.

Whether one is facing an illness, an injury, bankruptcy, divorce or tribulations, what you’re about to face will provide a greater opportunity for gain or loss than anything else you will experience in your lifetime.

The book was more than a memoir, it was about how one balances faith and the reality of a fatal disease. In the struggle between faith and doubt, the things we think we know often cause the most trouble.

A tough subject to discuss, life and death, for those who have a relationship with Jesus still struggle, but at the end of the day we know He is always with us and will never forsake us.

God’s Hostage: A True Story of Persecution, Imprisonment, and Perservance

What would you do for Jesus? How far would you go to share your faith? Persecution of Christians in on the rise throughout the world, churches are bombed or burned, believers are imprisoned or harassed even to the point that trying to share the gospel is illegal. I finished the book in one day and highly recommend God’s Hostage.
“God’s Hostage,” a true story of persecution, imprisonment, and perseverance is a true story of a pastor and his wife serving as missionaries in Turkey. In 1993 Andrew Brunson and his wife moved to Turkey, the largest unevangelized country in the world, through some difficulties and threats they were successful in planting new churches in a place where many people had never met a Christian.
They were arrested in 2016, Turkey released Norine, who stayed in the country, Andrew was imprisoned for 735 days. He was discouraged, at times felt that God abandoned him, broken, heart wrenching, but in the end a light in a very dark world. I found it quite upsetting that countries use innocent people for political purposes. At the end of the day, God is in control, He is always with us. He will bring us through the darkest of days.

Don’t Lose Hope: Gospel Hope for the Discouraged Soul

How do we not lose heart in a world of natural disasters, war, famine, broken relationships and broken dreams? “Don’t Lose Heart” Gospel Hope for the Discouraged Soul is encouraging. The author separates the book into two sections, the first is How to fight for sight and includes what to do when you feel overwhelmed, defeated and worthless. Part is: How to defeat despair: What to do when the past paralyzes you, when the present disappoints you and what to do when the future scares you. The author backs up the chapters with pertinent bible verses.

Put yourself on the path of grace where you will hear the word of Christ, and link arms with others who will run the race with you. The picture of Hebrews 12 fits with the popular African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together.” Let’s fight together, run together and finish together. We are not meant to do life on our own, we are to do life with our church and community.

The Roll of the Drums

“The Roll of the Drums” is the second book in the series, The Amish of Weaver’s Creek. The author picks up with Gideon Fisher, his wife and four children who are in the process of moving to another community. When they come upon Weaver Creek they see a young women and ask her where they could find a place to stay and their friendship starts.

The Weaver’s have an extra room and allow the Fisher’s to stay with them. Ruby and Lydia Weaver offer to help take of care of Gideon’s wife who is ill as well as watch over their children. Lavinia asks Ruby to make her a tall promise as well as her husband.

I like how the author weaves in the Civil War and Amish traditions. A story about true love, redemption, forgiveness and mercy. “ The Roll of the Drums” can be read on its own, but you will miss the relationships that develop in the first book.

The Sound of Distant Thunder

I was part of a Blind Book Tour and received “The Sound of Distant Thunder” by author Jan Drexler. The sweetness of young love, the conflict and sorrow of the War Between the States, the wisdom of married couples mixed with faith, family and freedom drew me in from page one.

Katie Stuckey is in love with the idea of being in love and does not want to wait till she turns 18 to get married although her dad feels she is too young. She wants to honor her parents and have their blessing. Katie has a fear that a was put on her by a previous school teacher that whomever she gets close to will meet their demise.

Jonas Weaver who Katie has her eye on does not want to follow the teachings of the church especially for the abolitionist cause. Jonas brother, Samuel who is married comes up in the draft list and Jonas volunteers to take his place. The Amish are a peaceful people and do not believe in war, they were granted permission to pay $200 per man if drafted, rather than go fight. Or they can hire someone to go in their place.

He and Katie are in love, can they stay committed to one another while Jonas is off fighting the Civil War? Or does Levi who Jonas asked to look after Katie have feelings for her? Jonas has no idea of Levi’s feelings for his wife.

I am looking forward to Book Two in the series, “The Amish of Weaver’s Creek and to find out what happens. I enjoy reading about the Amish, their struggles of faith, love and hope and see how they work through everything together.

Will they be able to work together and not let their past get in the way?

We are all flawed and love how the author showed that the characters struggled, but they stood firm in their faith.

Love Changes Everything

This is the purpose of humanity, that we would allow God to make his ultimate point to the world through our lives if we stay obedient to him. We all crave a love that doesn’t fade and doesn’t fail-even when we do. The author used the book of Hosea to show the depth of love that God has for us and demonstrate what true love is. God’s love is not a feeling, but solid truth, His love never fails. We should learn how to live from love and not for love. Hosea’s love for Gomer was unconditional even after he brought her back from a sinful life.

I have a renewed perspective on how greatly I am loved by the One who is love.  Love Changes Everything shows the love of God in a new way, despite our faults, our failures and our sins God still loves us just like he loved Hosea and Gomer.

Jesus In Me

Discover how to better love and rely on the person of the Holy Spirit. Often, we overlook the third person of the trinity- the Holy Spirit. The author breaks down how we can experience the Holy Spirit as a constant companion. To often we reject what we do not understand. When Anne’s husband passed away, she found comfort from the Holy Spirit, as a counselor, helper and intercessor. The book reinforced that the Holy Spirit is with me every day through thick or thin.

Chapter 22 “His Purity Is Beautiful In Us” spoke to me in several ways. One of the responsibilities of the Spirit is to make us holy as He is holy. Our responsibility is to cooperate with Him if we truly want to experience purity. How often does the Holy Spirit talk to us about forgiveness and we sometimes do not listen? When He says we need to forgive, we need to forgive.

Hebrews 4:15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testing’s we do, yet he did not sin. I think every Christian needs to read “Jesus In Me.” The book deserves a 10/10.

Forty Days with the Lord’s Prayer

We are familiar with the Lord’s Prayer, but how often do we take the time to mediate on each of the verses?  Deep down in every human being is a fundamental awareness of God and a desire for divine help in turbulent times. “May It Be So: Forty Days with the Lord’s Prayer” is a prayer guide that combines words and art to help give the reader a further understanding allowing God to speak into our hearts.

I finished the book in one sitting and was challenged by the prayers and the pause and reflect at the end of each chapter. This book would be a great resource for the new Christian.

You Belong With Me

“You Belong With Me” is Tari Faris’ debut novel the first in the Restoring Heritage series. When a business tycoon is determined to raze historic homes in a small town of Heritage, Michigan, and replace them with a strip mall, realtor Hannah resolves to stop him. Hannah applies for a restoration grant that will put the town back on the map.
Luke Johnson never felt he belonged after being in and out of the foster care system. He now has a chance to earn his place in his hometown. But he does not anticipate how his relationship with Hannah will set into motion events that reveal the truth about who he is.
Janie who has returned from spending a year in Paris is still trusting God after finding out that her ex-boyfriend who broke up with her for no reason is now engaged. Janie and Thomas land up working together temporarily in the diner and discover that just maybe they still have feelings for each other.
The author touches on learning how to trust others and effectively trust God. Both Luke and Hannah are two people who have been hurt in the past and they discover each other and work through their hurts together. “Isn’t that so much like life? All the pieces are there, but it takes the Master to arrange them in the right way.” Faris writes about characters that the reader can relate to and that have a Christian theme. We all struggle but having faith in God will pull us through just like Hannah and Luke. A story of redemption, forgiveness, mercy and love. I highly recommend the book.

Good vs. Evil

The Girl Behind the Red Rope was the first book that I read from the author. I am not sure what I expected and was conflicted. The theme of the book is darkness versus light- we as Christians are the light of the world and darkness can not exist in the light. In a world where the boundaries are clear and punishments are severe, a young woman risks everything to break free from the system of fear and control to find freedom and love. If we have a relationship with Jesus, we have salvation and hope not fear. I thought of the red rope and what it symbolizes for those who might be on the wrong side. Are you willing to choose love over fear?

Forged Through Fire

Wow, what a story of redemption, love and forgiveness. “Forged through Fire” is the raw and unvarnished story of a man searching for meaning and answers in the midst of great trials.” Jesus certainly does not promise His followers a life free from trials or pain, but the author’s faith is not in any shape perfect, he spent time away from God, but through his trials and pain he learned that God is always with him. When he was 16, Mark was in a catastrophic house fire that claimed the lives of his mother and youngest brother. Suffering burns over 65% of his body, his first thoughts turned to death being better than the suffering he was in.
If you or a loved one has suffered from personal trauma, disease or loss that has tested or stolen your faith and exhausted your emotional resources, you’ll find real hope in his redemptive story. I went through a dark time as a care giver for my grandmother who passed away from dementia. To say it was easy would be an understatement. Believing in God and trusting in Him does not mean our lives will be easy or we won’t face struggles. Romans 8:28- And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called to his purpose. Mark shared his near-death experience which made his faith stronger in the end. With each reconstructive surgery after the other his faith was tested. Still, he became a physical therapist, physician, and later a plastic reconstructive surgeon.
I highly recommend “Forged through Fire.” If Mark preserved through all his trials and pain there is no reason why we can’t.

Finding Lady Enderly

Not quite a rags to riches story, Raina Bretton is a rag women in London’s east end when a handsome stranger appears in an alley and offer’s her a chance for an adventure. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her, one that will take her away from a hard life and give her a chance to be a Lady. This was the first book that I read from the author and will be adding her books to my to be read pile.
If you enjoy reading historical books with a twist, you will enjoy reading this one.
